The value of the weight

The weight of a diamond, expressed in carats, is one of the key factors that determine its value. In its evaluation, a carat scale is used to classify the stone’s weight. The smallest diamonds can weigh less than one carat, while the largest diamonds can weigh several carats, the latter being extremely rare and valuable. In addition to weight, carat also relates to the physical dimensions of a diamond. Two diamonds of equal carat weight may have different sizes and appearances due to differences in their cut and weight distribution.

The rarity of larger diamonds is due to the fact that most natural diamonds mined are small in size, making large diamonds highly coveted by collectors and jewellery lovers.

It is important to note that the value of a diamond is not only determined by its carat weight, but also by the quality of other aspects such as cut, clarity and colour. A diamond of lower carat weight but with exceptional cut, flawless clarity and colourless colour may be more valuable than a diamond of higher carat weight but lower quality in these aspects.

Diamonds are often graded into categories based on their carat weight:

• Small diamonds: less than 0.3 carats.
• Medium diamonds: between 0.3 and 0.99 carats.
• Large diamonds: 1 carat and above.
